Black & Decker DCM675BF 5-Cup Drip Coffee Programmable Maker with Permanent Filter

BandD 5C Program CoffeeMaker, Permanent Filter
Customer Review: Great but needs more heat!
For the price and the features, I don't think you can beat this little guy. My only complaint is that the coffee is not as hot as I'd like it to be, even as soon as it's done brewing. It's not hot, more like warm to very warm. Other than that, it's a great little unit. Just the right size, and very user friendly.
Customer Review: Amazing little brewer for cheap! Able to "Potless-Brew!"
Just right for a quick "Single" cup of coffee. I brew directly into the cup so I don't need (or want) the mid-brewing auto-shutoff for pouring during brewing. On units that have temporary brew-stopping device will not brew directly into a mug or cup. Reason is the little spring-loaded shut-off valve is always on "off" when the pot is removed. So, this unit is just great for a pot-less brewing directly into your mug. Great for the one or two people who want decaf when you're brewing a pot of regular. Linens-n-Things has it for $19.95 less 20% if you get their coupons in local flyers. I paid $16.00, amazing. I don't like permanent filters because they retain the coffee oil after brewing and that oil film eventually turns rancid unless you wash the basket after each brewing with detergent to remove the oil. Does anyone know who makes a 4-cup round paper filter for use? I am using a #2 cone filter but it fits sloppily. Suggestions?

Before purchasing a drinking water filter system, be sure to review the product's data sheet for performance. You'll probably be surprised at some of the contaminants the systems "leave in" the water.

Not all companies make product data sheets readily available to their customers, but in some states the manufacturer of a drinking water filter system is required to include certified product performance data, along with their brochures and other information. Companies with websites can easily provide performance information to potential customers before a purchase is made.

Be suspicious of companies that are "iffy" about what their drinking water filter system can do. You want a system that specifically states it will removes chlorine, lead, cysts, THMs, VOCs, lindane, alachlor, benzene, atrazine, TCE and MTBE. Of the 10 most popular companies, only two can remove MTBE.

MTBE is used in industries as a solvent, but it's most common use is as an "anti-knocking" gasoline additive. It has found its way into public drinking water supplies due to leaky fuel lines and underground storage tanks, and then leaching back into our ground water.

Hundreds of lawsuits around the country are currently pending, because once MTBE gets into the water, it's nearly impossible to remove without a complex multi-stage drinking water filter system. Large scale water treatment facilities, currently are unable to remove this chemical.

Just about any drinking water filter system will block chlorine, but only about half can block THM's, which are by-products of using chlorine to disinfect the water. It just doesn't make much sense to filter out chlorine and leave in the dangerous by-products.

Chloroform is one of the more prevalent THM's. The FDA suggests that the majority of homes in America have at least some degree of chloroform gas in the air. They identified showering in chlorinated water, as the cause. In addition to a drinking water filter system, you may want to consider a shower filter or a whole house filter.

Exposure to chloroform gas can cause dizziness and headaches. At concentrated levels, it will cause unconsciousness. Researchers believe that exposure to chloroform is particularly dangerous during pregnancy and can cause miscarriage or birth defects.

The other chemicals and contaminants mentioned above all carry significant health risks. The best drinking water filter system will block them all, but there are only two systems currently on the market that can handle the job. The performance data sheet of the product you are considering should list all of these contaminants, along with the percentage that it blocks them by.

Product data sheets also allow you to compare the cost of using an in-home drinking water filter system. Different from the purchase price, the cost of use includes replacement filters and other costs associated with the product.

You have to remember to compare apples to apples. The cost of using a whole house drinking water filter system will be quite different from that of a kitchen unit. But, that may help you decide whether whole house or kitchen and shower filters are right for your family.

Black & Decker DCM2590 SmartBrew 8-Cup Drip Coffeemaker with Thermal Carafe, Black

Perfect Pour® thermal carafe keeps coffee hot and fresh for hours and has a dripless spout for serving ease. Easy-to-set digital clock/timer lets you wake up to the rich aroma and flavor of fresh-brewed coffee.
Customer Review: Returned it......
Sorry to say... The coffee just didn't taste right. It seemed like every cup of coffee tasted musty. At first I thought maybe the coffee was the problem (old, etc...) but we tried three different brands. I think the problem came down to the coffee maker was not heating up the water hot enough. A recent article stated that the drip water must reach 195 degrees to make good coffee and this coffeemaker sure didn't seem to be getting anywhere near that. Seemed almost lukewarm.
Customer Review: Good coffee
I ordered this as a gift for my son who lives in a college dorm. He tells me it works well, makes good coffee; the only issue he has is that the amount of condensation on top of the carafe causes it to be a bit "drippy," but not excessively so. He is saving money by having the coffee in his room as opposed to buying expensive coffee drinks elsewhere. I would order this product again.

Our house is thought to be a place of peace and refuge. A place we can be safe in. Is it really! With a whole house air purifier, it can be. With cold and flu season upon us, our house is the worst place to be. This article will help you uncover the cold hard facts.

We take all kinds of precautions to help prevent ourselves from catching a cold or flu. We put on our coats, hats, mittens and boots and we try to stay warm and dry. At times we may not even go outside or shopping, etc. because it is raining or cold out. Did you know that the place we think of most as a safety zone, is actually our worst enemy?

Our house can carry more germs, bacteria and viruses than you can be exposed to anywhere else. That is why you might want to consider a whole house air purifier. We spend more time in our homes than most anywhere else and it is a more confined restricted area where germs and bacteria can thrive. There are times in the day, when the light is shining just right, that you can actually see the dust particles in the air. Those dust particles carry germs and bacteria and are just waiting for a place to land. Let's face it, along with dust mites that are probably covering your bed and pillows, is the air you are breathing in the privacy of your own home healthy?

There are many air purifiers on the market today and each has its own unique application. Many are designed for in house use. Some are designed to filter out odors; some are made to eliminate germs and bacteria, where others may get rid of gaseous smells. A whole house air purifier can be ducted throughout your entire home in the duct vents. This can be installed by a professional or you may want to do it yourself. Unlike some air purifiers designed for in home use that only filter a small square footage, the whole house air purifier can filter the air in your entire home, making the air cleaner and healthier to breathe. This will result in fewer colds and flu and make your house the place of safety and refuge you like to think of it as.

Customer Review: Forget about replacements
DOn't think about buying this product unless plan on never having to replace the carafe. I purchased a boat and this unit came installed in it. During one of our trips, the carafe came out of the unit and crashed on the floor. I called Applica/B&D only to be connected to some company called Fox International. Their customer service rep told me that no carafes are available for the 3 month old coffeemaker, but they would be more than happy to sell me a new coffeemaker. It is quite apparent that Applica has no concern about providing service for any items they sell.
Customer Review: Replacement Coffee Maker
The unit was a re-built unit and has worked without fail every AM for the last year. There is a water leaking problem when you fill the water bin to the max (12 cups), however you can keep this from being a problem by only filling it to 11 cup level.

Evaporative coolers for commercial purposes? It may sound strange since we all are used to personal evaporative coolers. The concept of commercial air coolers is the same as the one that you use at your home. The difference lies in the size of the unit and the area covered. Industries need big sized air coolers that are capable of cooling larger areas. Moreover, the evaporative coolers used for commercial purposes require good quality durable cabinets, usually made of stainless steel with long lasting wet pads and heavy pumps. They are efficient in providing area and spot cooling within no time.

Air Coolers In Workplace

It is believed that to work properly in your workplace, you need to have a room temperature of around 23 24 C, failing which the work efficiency decreases. But in most places, the need to cool the room temperature is felt only for a few months. Thus, installing heavy air conditioners is unnecessary in those regions. The three basic things that commercial houses consider in an air cooler are its speed, flexibility and cost. The evaporative coolers are a popular choice for commercial purposes because compared to air conditioners; they are less expensive and suit well in ventilated places like workshops and factories.

Features Of Commercial Air Coolers

The commercial coolers comprise powerful motors and premium pads. The pads are so prepared to provide extra protection against harmful pollutants and excess cooling. The throw of commercial coolers is larger as they are designed to cool large areas. Most of them are provided with heavy wheels for ease in movement that can be locked. The diameter of the fan and the water retention capacity is larger than the personal coolers.

Made out of stainless steel, they are durable and provide years of service and maintenance. The best part is, depending on the application, the units can be custom designed. In most cases the powerful blowers have backward incline or forward curve to manage high volume of air and static pressure. The commercial coolers are available in up discharge, down, side and various other configurations.

Standard Sized Air Coolers

The standard size of the commercial evaporative coolers can go up to 60,000 CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute). There are a few things that are to be kept in mind while selecting commercial evaporative coolers. Avoid coated or galvanized steel and use a stainless steel of grade 304 to enhance durability. These economic coolers not only decrease the cost of operation, but also ensure the constant supply of cool and fresh air in and out of the area where it is placed.

Matthew Anderson adds regularly reviews on air coolers to http://www.evaporative-air-coolers.com, an online information magazine about the basics of how evaporative air coolers work and some of the advantages of the technology for a good air conditioning . Read more about how to maintain evaporative coolers for different models and commercial manufacturers as well as the range of prices and at his specialized website

Air Conditioners: In an Air Conditioner chemicals are used to cool the temperature of the room. The liquid chemicals are produced from a gas, which again converts to gas form. The chemical transfers the heat from the inside to the outside of the room.

Mainly the Air Conditioner machine has three parts, a compressor, a condenser and an evaporator. The condenser and compressor are in the outside portion of the machine while the evaporator is located inside the room.

In the processor the chemical, which is a low-pressured cooled gas, enters. The processor then squeezes that chemical. It makes the molecules of the chemical come closer together. The closer molecules create high energy and heat. The chemical leaves the compressor as hot and high-pressure gas and enters the condenser. At the backside of the machine we can see a metal fin. It works as a radiator and helps to cool down the heat very quickly. When the chemical leaves the condenser, it becomes very cold. The liquid flows in the evaporator through a small hole.

On the other end the chemical becomes colder and starts to evaporate and becomes gas. As the liquid becomes gas it soaks heat from the surrounding area. The heat of the air is needed to separate molecules of the chemical, which were packed together in the processor. The evaporator also has metal fins to exchange cool temperature with surrounding air. The liquid again leaves the evaporator and begins the same process. A fan connected with the evaporator circulates the cool air into the room.

In simple words static electricity can be defined as an electrical imbalance of a material that can interrelate with other materials. An atom has the positively (+) charged Protons and negatively (-) charged Electrons in equal numbers and force. This equilibrium is vitiated when an Electron leaves the atom (Protons dont migrate) and the atom becomes positive. The charge thus created is stagnant and can be either on the surface or volumetric.

This condition often causes serious problems to men, machines and materials particularly in electronic, textile, plastic, paper and other industries that use or produce nonconductive materials. The loss resulting from static electricity is colossal in the United States. It includes injury, sometimes fatal, to workmen from shock, damage to machinery and equipments, and poor quality of the product. It is imperative to measure, control and diffuse this dangerous charge.

In conductive materials, static electricity can be grounded. But where nonconductive materials are involved, the ideal way to neutralize static charge is to follow the dictum opposites attract. If particles which have opposite polarization to the ones present are released, they draw each other and diffuse the charge. This is known as ionization.

For this function, static bars are cost efficient. They have ionizing points that emit both positive and negative charged particles known as ions. Once the static charge that is causing problem is located and its magnitude assessed, static bars can be placed strategically near the trouble spot. It would be prudent to consult an expert before undertaking this job.

There are different types of static bars. Some are short. Others are long and rigidly constructed to avoid intermediate support. Portable ones offer flexibility. A shockless bar is available for installing in areas where the chance of personnel coming into contact with it exists.

Maintenance is simple. Keep the bars clean and they will give extended service.

Static Eliminators provides detailed information on Anti Static Bars, Anti Static Mats, Static Cling, Static Control and more. Static Eliminators is affiliated with Clutch Driven Vacuum Pumps.

Black & Decker DCM2900 SmartBrew 12 Cup Digital Coffee Maker

Programmable Clock and Timer / Stop & Serve Mode / Easy to Read Water Reservoir Markings / Removable Brew Basket / White
Customer Review: Dribble Carafe
Purchased to replace a Mr. Coffee that finally gave up the ghost. Had comparable features like auto brew timer and auto shut off. Will be replacing it soon with another Mr Coffee. When you pour the first and second cups you can expect to make a mess with the dribble carafe. It is difficult to fill the coffee maker with water without making another mess. I dont know why they added a splash bar across the fill area but it does make filling it with water a challenge. On the positive side the brew timer and suto shut off work well and it makes coffee as you would expect. The big down side is that useability is lacking.
Customer Review: Stay away from this one
I have had this coffee maker for about a month. I thought the longer I had it, the easier it would be to pour coffee into a cup or water into the maker without making a mess on the counter top. I was wrong. I am going to return this one and get one of the 'real' Smartbrew Black & Decker coffee makers. This one is not a 'Smartbrew' model. The Smartbrew models have what B&D calls a Perfect Pour spout. These carafes are a breeze to pour. No dribbles, ever. Why they don't use the nicer carafe on all their models is a mystery to me. I have had a non-programmable B&D Smartbrew coffee maker at my camper for 7 years. It makes way better coffee than this one and the carafe is way better.

We've all seen those air purifier infomercials. But can a little $449 home air purifier really help allergies? Last year over 4 million air purifiers were sold in the US. And while allergies rank #1 as the reason people bought an air purifier the rise of childhood asthma (up 60% over the last 10 years) is a close second.

With 106 air purifier manufacturers and 12 technologies to research I was overwhelmed. I wondered what type works best for allergies? Or asthma? And the strong competition between manufacturers is creating confusion for consumers. According to one industry analyst:

"Manufacturers are battling over whether ozone purifiers, ion purifiers, and the no-replacement-filter-type purifiers are best in the minds of consumers"

According to Rich Mayer, a Research Scientist who specializes in Air Purification Technology 3 things stand out:

1) Most air technology on the market has been around over 40 years.

2) Most people didnt know what technology matched their needs (to know see below)

3) Most people are paying too much, and for the wrong technology.

5 things you should know before you buy an Air Purifier

#1: Replacement Filters are Over-Priced

In Japan air purifiers include 2-3 extra replacement filters. WHY? Because the Japanese think ahead.

U.S. manufacturers realize American's dont think ahead so they overcharge. Once you purchase an air purifier youll be stuck paying what they ask. (Reminds me of my $89 inkjet printer the replacement cartridges are $28!)

Remedy: Ask for filter prices first. Every 6-12 months youll need to change filters. And anything over $25 is too much.

Buying Hint: Ask for a discount on extra replacement filters before buying.

#2: Avoid Purifiers That Say: No Replacement Filters

The idea sounds great but once you've seen a dirty HEPA filter (HEPAs are a cloth-like filter which holds dust and pollution) you realize the ones without filters aren't catching very much dust or pollen YOUR LUNGS ARE!

No Replacement Filter Models include:

Ionic Breeze

Oreck Models (they contradict themselves on their website. You have to replace filters, but they aren't HEPA)

Remedy Get an air purifier that has affordable replacements. HEPA is important if you have allergies.

#3: "Fanless" Air Purifiers Wont Move Enough Air

The ionic purifiers sell you on how quiet they are and how little electricity they use. The problem is they dont move any air.

(Note; Because of this problem Sharper Image went to fans in their new models)

Remedy: Avoid purifiers without fans.

#4 Avoid Loud Fan Motors

A few people have emailed me that after buying an air purifier they couldn't sleep.

Remedy: For a super quiet fan ask for one with brushless motors. Read the box for decibel levels. 20-35 decibels is quiet enough for sleep.

#5: It Wont Do The Square Footage On The Box

I called Oreck when their new $700 tower was listed as covering 1100 square feet. How Many Times Does It Change The Air In The Room? (which means how many times it will change all the air in that room).
They didnt know. Finally a tech said: One per hour. Thats poor.

Remedy: Make sure to ask for 4-9 Changes Per Hour per Square footage.(You may have to call the manufacturer) Square Footage as listed on the box is also based on an empty room.

How to Choose The Right Technology

Here are some guidelines to match the basic technologies to your needs:

#1 HEPA, Pre-filter, Neg/Ion, Plasma Grid = Helpful for allergies and asthma, some odors

#2 Carbon, Charcoal, Ozone = Helpful for odors, smoke, animal smells, chemical sensitivity, VCOs, and immune system

#3 UV, TiO2, Plasma Grid, Ceramic = Helpful for immune system (colds, flu, viruses, pathogens), and eliminating musty odors

New Sensor Technology
There is a cool new technology from Japan that detects pollen. It promises to bring greater allergy relief. It continuously adjusts the purifier to the room saving electricity and guesswork.

In the end the home Air Purifier I found became one of the 3 parts of the plan that eliminated my allergies.

Mark Richardson is a Los Angeles based Health Practitioner and Author. He has been interviewed on over 300 radio and TV stations across the U.S. on how he cured his allergies and asthma by changing 3 things in his external and internal environment.
